THIN - Ethics - MREC |
|
In the UK, all
research involving data collected from National Health Service
(NHS) patients must be approved by a Research Ethics
Committee. The THIN Scheme was approved by the NHS South-East
Multi-centre Research Ethics Committee (MREC) in 2002.
All researchers planning to publish or broadcast studies using
THIN Data will require ethical approval. THIN Data research
studies are usually reviewed by type 3 Multi-Centre Research
Ethics Committees.
EPIC can assist researchers prepare and submit applications
for ethical review.
THIN has now received ethical approval for studies using only
pre-collected, anonymised data to receive only a scientific
review. An independent scientific protocol review committee (SPRC)
is soon to be established and a new process will gradually
replace the submissions required for Multi-centre Research
Ethics Committee (MREC). However, those studies requiring validation
or which need to collect additional data will still need to
seek ethical approval from MREC as this is outside the remit
of the SPRC.
If you or you know of any person that may be interested in
working voluntarily as a member of the SPRC, please contact
Dr Mary Thompson for more
information.
