Postcode Variable Indicators (PVI) |
| |
EPIC can
now provide anonymous postcode linked area based
socioeconomic, ethnicity and environmental indices for
studies using THIN Data. This information can provide
important information about potential study bias and/or
confounding which will enhance the usefulness of THIN Data
for epidemiological, public health and health services
research.
Townsend scores and ethnicity variables (urban
classification, ethnic classification and long term
illness) were derived for each area using 2001 census
data. In addition information on local pollution levels
for larger areas (mean annual PM10, SO2, NO2 & NOx
exposure) were derived. These scores were converted from
exact scores into quintiles to indicate the level of
deprivation, ethnicity and pollution. UK postcodes were
then matched to output area quintiles for all the
variables. INPS have written software for THIN which
allows the patient id to be mapped to these quintiles via
the patient’s postcode during a THIN Data collection. |
